The gods have spoken, and the will of the gods sees the release of Ubisoft’s latest instalment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise with ‘Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey’ and let’s just say, it looks outstanding! The open world action role-playing video game developed by Ubisoft Quebec, and published by Ubisoft, is set in 431BCE and tells the fictional story of the Peloponnesian War between the Delian League of Athens and the Peloponnesian League, led by Sparta.
This new game has more focus on role-playing elements than previous games in the series, with dialogue trees, new quests and multiple endings. Plus, you’ll be able to choose the gender of your main character, either adopting the role of Alexis or Kassandra, and have the ability to develop romantic relationships with non-playable characters of your choice. The game will also feature a mercenary notoriety system. If you character commits crimes, then they will be chased and targeted by non-playable characters. Sounds intense! Let’s take a look at the launch trailer for Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey’!
Both Alexis and Kassandra star the game as mercenaries and as descendants of Spartan King, Leonidas I, with a spear that’s forged into a blade which gives them special combat abilities. The game also features a skill tree system that lets players unlock new abilities as you fight. These skills are aptly called “hunter”, “warrior” and “assassin”, which focus on archery, combat and stealth.
‘Assasssin’s Creed: Odyssey’ also features naval combat, as you take to the Aegean Sea in Hellenistic Era Warships, in the conflict between Athens and Sparta. The “war system” lets you take on new mercenary contracts and participate in large-scale battles. So, it’s time to get your sword at the ready, because here comes in an in-depth gameplay overview.
This new instalment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise is a new and refreshed version of previous games, but the popular hitbox combat system introduced in Origins remains. However, this time around, it’s been expanded to grant the player access to four different special skills when the ability bar fills up. This lets players use a power finishing move in combat, such as a rain of arrows or powerful kick to knock opponents off-balance.
As in the previous game, the narrative when set in modern-day follows Layla Hassan, before jumping straight into ancient Greece, where you’ll have to fight your way through the Peloponnesian War between the Delian League of Athens and the Peloponnesian League of Sparta. Which side of the war will you end up fighting for? That’s entirely up to you to choose…
